Well, role play is:
Quote:
1 : to act out the role of
2 : to represent in action

Roleplaying, in its simplest form, is the act of taking up the role of a fictional character or characters and going a story from their perspective. This ranges from Tabletop Role playing games - in which you would speak and describe your character's actions to Live Action role playing - in which you physically act out your character's actions.

Role Playing in a computer game context broadly categorises a large quantity of games (For example, Halo arguably is, as is Deus Ex) - in which you take the role of a character.

Games often (and infact, very rarely do they not) take up elements from more than one culture. For example: The Warcraft series (I-III) is both a Real Time Strategy and Roleplaying game. In addition, Final Fantasy can be argued to have an element of turn based strategy in it.

Roleplaying games tend to be identifiable by:
Heavy Emphasis on storyline and character development.
A linear, or fairly linear, storyline.
(In my opinion, character advancement (Leveling up) and procurement of equipment is not a fundamental part of a RPG - although it is frequently included.)

On the topic of Zelda:
It's an RPG, in my opinion. It definitely has RPG elements in it. Whether it'd pop up in my mind when someone says "RPG"? Probably not. I'd think Oblivion, Final Fantasy or Neverwinter Nights, but that doesn't mean it is not.

Zelda doesn't have character development(midna is debatable) , nor(imo) does it have a heavy emphasis on story , sure it bigger than games like CoD , halo , AoE , EUIII etc... , but smaller than RPG's :P. And leveling up is(imo) something that makes an RPG a , RPG , but only because most RPG's have them.(WoW/FF/Morrorwind)

And it indeed does have RPG elements , zelda is more of a hybrid.(Sorta like ME/EUIII) but it does not classife as a RPG , calling it action-adventure / action RPG hybrid , would do fine :P.

I prefer to quick it to action/adventure tho.

I agree it's a hybrid. As I said, most games are. And there is character development and such... unfortunately in the earlier games it's sort of overshadowed by the fact the graphics are terrible (I'm not a "The graphics are bad, it must be bad!" person. I generally don't care, as long as they're workable) and the game barely works in itself. Also, the action/adventure bit is really fun, so most people ignore the story :P

The only character development that i see in LoZ is how links mindset changes in alot of the game and how the character gets better as he gets more equipment. And yes the action/adventure definitely takes the player off the fact that this is the exact same storyline as many of the others except for a few alterations here and there...

No it does not , becease zelda and FF , don't belong to the same genre.

"bow/ocarina/armor/health"
bow : theirs only 1 bow in the zelda games.
ocarina : not a upgrade , its a item. You get a different one later in the game , keyword being "different" not "upgrade'
armor : you never upgrade it , getting a suit to breath underwater is not a upgrade.
health : not a item , plenty of games have ways to increase your health(non-rpg's).

Wrong, the bow has multiple arrow upgrades different items sure, but upgrade never the less. Armor does upgrade to different environments you go through again, different items but upgrade never the less. Health is a factor like other RPG's it's a stat that upgrades as you progress it's just calculated in a different manner mainly through story line and a lot of secrets rather than experience.

This is clearly going off-topic.
The only thing Zelda has to do with this topic is that it has the 1# spot.
FF on the other hand , has nothing to with it.

Posts in the thread led to speaking about RPG's and Final Fantasy which led into me using that game as an example for RPG's in a general sense.

Quote:
I'll give you few tips tho.
hint 1 :
(J)RPG's have:
1# (most of the time)Turn based battle systems.
2# Stats
3# item upgrades(multiple!).
4# Are focused on story (story > gameplay)

All of these are in Zelda's OoT game, which at first you denied Zelda being any sort of RPG entirely now you're calling it a hybrid which I'd agree upon seeing as the stats bit is arguable since health is the only thing you can change.

In my own personal opinion I classify RPG as a game such as Super Mario RPG one of the most classic games I've always loved to play even now I don't mind playing that game you learn something new every time you go through it.

To clarify. I used character advancement to signify levelling up, items and weapons and character development to signify personality, behavioural and emotional changes.

I know, I just realised the way I phrased it was ambiguous.

Oh, sorry then... I got a little defensive there. But now to sum up this whole topic imo....

SMG2 is highly reguarded to game review sites and therefore got some right to be compared to LoZ:OoT the Number 1 spot. LoZ is an RPG to an extent but is of course a crossover to action and adventure as well... And on a side note... FF is the best RPG... I've got my facts from this now :)
