To know something is not visible means you know that it should be visible therefore he knows what it is.

Again I restate, if you have the knowledge to know that something is not visible he knows what should be visible. If he did not he would be unable to say "my rank is not visible" since he would simply not know it existed. Thus being able to recognize the problem means he knows where the problem lies and once he can tell us which specific thing is not showing up (since there is not just one "rank" in sm) we can diagnose it.
