That calculation is a bit short-sighted. You forgot that there was the Indian Ocean Tsunami, Haiti Earthquake, and other disasters that occured between your former event and the latter. Why count them out? They're as devastating as the others, and when you do include them, you'll find that your calculation is thrown out the window.

Disasters happen. Hurricane Katrina happened a while back and that didnt meant he world was going to end. Natural Disasters happen all the time. That is why they are called natural disasters.

In 2012, there's supposedly going to be a solar flare. It's not going to end the world. It's just going to be dangerous outside for a few days.

What ponk said has no scientific backing. In fact, none of evidence for 2012 has any scientific grounds. They all run along the lines of "some old dude with a calculator said so!"

Actually, modern scientists have found events on the sun that lead to the conclusion of a solar flare in 2012 ;]
