I'm in a same situation. You say unless I have an army to defend them. Does that mean that even though I'm already conquered someone can attack my colony and reset the 72 ticks I need to relocate my colony?

yeah. not only does being attacked reset the ticks though, but also being hit by a spy or a nuke/dragon will reset your ticks too
