How about an Attachments to items?
Each item can have only one attachments.
You might need to pay, but let's leave that to devs.
(I'm new here, and how do i make polls?)

Voted yes I like this idea it would make mechs more unique And also to add a poll when you create a topic in suggestions at the bottom of the page there is poll creation and to make a poll it should look like this depending on what the poll is about. http://prntscr.com/1e02cq

I like it! However not the idea of paying for it, since it would truly make this great game pay-to-win.

I think the OP means pay with in-game cash to buy the attatchment, seems like a good idea. It would be another button near special items or whatever saying 'Weapon Atatchments' and you could choose from:
Additional damage (more % per level)
Additional Electric damage (more per level)
Additional Explosive damage (more per level)
