To be clear, a guy have 5 crystals, me and another ally who are not in the same alliance want to attack him same eta. Will we combine in our attack, like if we are in the same alliance, or will his units kill mine and the concures and take all the spoils

once you get to the colony, all 3 sides will fight. The one with the biggest and best army, will be the victor.

To be more clear;

All 'attacking' units will attack the colony/destination first.

After the defensive units are gone, both attacking sides will engage and fight each other. The victor of the second battle will get the spoils.

So you should always look around to see who is attacking and only coordinate with your alliance.
