1. Although this usually is a gradual process, find the perfect level of strictness and discipline.

2. Always make sure your members are as active as they can be, maybe even offer an incentive for them to be active if necessary.

3. Explicitly tell all of your members who they can and cannot attack, along with marking alliances hostile and allied. Also inform them of any NAP's, peace treaties, wars, or negotiations. All of this is to ensure there are no diplomatic incidents.

4. Try and recruit members with good score (if your looking for members) and post a simple broadcast saying ''(alliance name here) is looking for active and loyal members.''

5. Although you may get alot of messages and alliance requests, try to deal with every one of them and don't neglect people. It can lead to problems down the road.

6. Encourage activity and skill by setting the example, that's your job as a leader. However, if you try to get some members active and they just won't comply, don't feel bad about kicking them and inviting new, active people.

7. That's all I can think of now, good luck! :)

My advice: Find an alliance you can have fun with in chat. That's basically most important. If not, you'll get bored before the era ends.

^this

and dyl's post with another advice:

always be considerate about members, if u see somebody is falling behind, ask them the reason and ask if u can help with anything. This will make u a trustworthy leader and everyone will be more willing to assist and follow ur orders.

Stay calm and use ur head, but don't headbutt them. Being a leader u will deal with lots of diplomacy stuffs outside and inside the alliance. One false move can lead to hell.

Always ask for suggestions and opinions about every big orders u will have: going to war, alliance chassis, getting a girlfriend, etc. Prove that u are willing to listen to ur members. However, when u have the final decision, u have to make sure everyone follow your decision.

Ive been a leader for quite a while so the one very tip that would help you win in ANY situation...
GET GOOD AT POLITICS
let the alliance handle everything else. you have the weight of alliance relationships to uphold
make sure wars go YOUR way
if they dont, rack up allies so you have 10 alliances go against 1
better to get an enemy out of the way than get the enemies riches all to yourself
another thing
try not to be enemies with a lot of people at a time
it is crucial that you only have 1 or 2 enemies at a time (not including subs)
if you run out of enemies
(although its cheap) find ways to branch off and leave some allies, find excuses to leave em.
Its kind of like letting a relationship end softly
you dont wanna be like "You are not worth any help to me, so i will conquer you and all your efforts"
lol
instead your saying "Some inconveniences came up and i dont want to, but i have to, dont take it too hard..."
haha
