how are you meant to attack some one else

By recruiting soldiers, putting them into a squad, then selecting the squad and launching it!

make units by clicking on your colony and clicking on recruit units button present

and then when your units are ready then send them into squads

now you can see your squads on your colony then click on it and select squads and then click on the target you want to attack then click on launch squads button present on a bar which comes up when you click on squads

and then you can see your squads moving

You have to get your units into a squad then launch at the target. But in order to attack you need to have gold mine lvl 3.

yep, and read some of the threads on this forum on how to make the ships as strong as can be ( i mean by having a certain amount of defence and certain amount of range)
and yes u have to have gold mine lvl 3!
