The Fusion Core in SM can currently only be used to destroy parts to upgrade other items directly. The ability to increase the damage/hit points of parts is useful but the Fusion Core could be improved.
The Fusion Core is gone, and replaced with the Item Workshop. The new Item Workshop is split into different sections:
Incinerator This section of the Item Workshop destroys items. Destroying items adds Power Points to the Power Bar which can be used to upgrade items or as a currency. Up to 10 items can be destroyed each time.
Fusion Core This section fuses power points into parts. Items start at 0 power. Levelling is based on level, rank (rare, epic etc.) and stats. For example, a legendary level 30 item will require much more power to reach the next level than a rare item of the same level. Also, fusion bonuses different stats depending on the item (e.g physical weapons will receive damage boosts while flamethrowers will receive heat damage boosts).
Upgrade Workshop This is different to the regular workshop. It allows you to add upgrades and paint to parts. The Workshop is unlocked at level 15. The Upgrade Shop can also be found within the Workshop and here Part Upgrades can be purchased using credits and Power Points. Part Upgrades can only be purchased once the appropriate level has been reached.
Part Upgrades These are purchased in the Upgrade Shop and increase an item's power. Part Upgrades are only compatible with items from the same item category (e.g an upgrade designed for a high-damage physical gun would not be compatible with a flamethrower) and a limited amount of upgrades can be applied to an item. Part Upgrades increase the weight of the item they are added to, with more powerful upgrades being heavier. Effects of Part Upgrades include (click spoiler):
XP Converter Allows Experience (XP) to be converted into Power Points in a 3:2 ratio. Unlocked at level 25.
Part Building Station This allows parts to be built without having to buy lots of item boxes to try and find them. To build items, a combination of credits, Power Points and Item Parts are required. Item Parts are sometimes found after destroying mechs or looting warehouses in campaign, and the amount of parts given is based on the difficulty of the mission. They can also be bought using credits. More powerful items require more Item Parts to build. Building items also takes 5-60 minutes to complete depending on the item. Items built this way initially have no fusion, which has to be added later. Unlocked at level 25, although the ability to build mythical items is unlocked at 150k XP.
New Weight System This is not part of the Item Workshop, but worth mentioning anyway. With this new system, torsos do not contribute to the overall weight of the mech, but instead have a basic weight capacity, which can be upgraded. The base amount is variable according to level and item type. The weight limit can be increased through upgrades, however these do contribute to the weight of the mech.
This new fusion system would heavily impact the gameplay style of SM, as it would require players to think carefully about the upgrades added to their items to stay competitive, with the best strategies dependant on using the most effective upgrades as opposed to only being dependant on using the most effective items. I hope this new fusion system is added in the next major patch. Comment and vote on this idea and suggest any improvements.
