@ Rupert Love your idea; I knew someone with the name Angier (and profile pic) would have some nostalgic ideas, but this exceeds my own expectations (oh, and I love The Prestige - easily one of my favorite movies). More than anything, thank for going out on a limb for this idea, it took some balls to suggest this one!
Now for Korupt …

Again it is not taking anything away from SM but it is making them seem unoriginal. Tell me how many star wars spinoffs, toys, new shows, games, and even new movies have you seen? Enough is enough and our game in my opinion should not contribute to this oversaturation by using something we really don't need. We have our niche and we fill it well.
I might be quite a smug unapologetic star wars elitist, but i think the point you are trying to make has been exaggerated a bit too much. I think a lightsaber-like weapon, if done correctly, will add a subtle touch of whimsy to the game.
And c'mon, what is SM's niche really? Is it something tangible; is there a product that screams SuperMechs to you? From what I have gathered, the central theme of SM is rather abstract – there is a random assortment of weapons that, may have a 'loose' logic to it, but ultimately is a set hand-me-down concepts amalgamated into one game. I think what makes this game so great is that it is simple and does not take itself too seriously. Why does it take 10 or 15 rockets to fire one rocket? Why do bullets do the same or more damage than rockets? How can a sword do more damage than any other weapon?
In short, this game is whimsical and the more we try and make this game serious, the less sophisticated it will be. The niche market this game can appeal too should not just be people who love mechs (the base) but to a wider array of fans that want light-hearted entertainment. If nothing more, the lightsaber would be a great bonus, level 70+ weapon that costs an arm and a leg to buy, and does 500+ damage – to be bought for sheer novelty.
Oh, and Korupt – was it possible near-death music was banal and tacky? Yes. Did that merit a no vote in your eyes?
