I had a lvl 30 heat shield and 10 physical resistance.
the 100 sword took off me 52 HP even though it can only be possible for it to deal 50 damage : 100 damage - 40 percent shield - 10 equals 50.
am I missing something? the shield was on

Only 52? I thought it first calculates the resistance first (TheSingular has made this point a few times before). So it would be first 100 - 10 = 90. Then, the shield would reduce 40 % of the rest of the damage caused by the sword (40 % of 90, which is actually 36 protected, or 54 damage in total). From my point of you, you ended up ahead because I think the devs took an average of these two approaches. [(54 + 50)/2] = 52
