Sempai (or more precisely senpai) is an honorifics for senior ones. Like if u're grade 11, then the 12th grader is ur senpai and u're senpai of 11th grader.

Japanese AND Otakus use honorifics to talk to each other as a way to show closeness or/and respect. Right Ten-kun?
